Theory of scarcity
“Which photo is most precious to you?”
Nope I’m not asking “which is your favourite photo?” Its a totally different question.
It suddenly occurred to me that, since the evolution of digital cameras and camera phones, people don’t take photos as they used to. In the past, where photos are being developed as hard copies, cost around 20¢ – 50¢ per piece. That’s a hefty sum to pay if you are developing a whole stack of photos! But now since photos can be stored digitally, no hard copies are necessary for you to view your photos, hence “storage / viewing cost” for your photos are practically zero! Which brings to the fact that you can have a crazy number of photos at no costs! And since there are no hard copies, you do not need those bulky albums and a closet to store them.
The ease and zero costs spawn a new era of photo collections. Now back to the above question. Which photo is most precious to you? Do you still carry a photo in your wallet like people used to, or would you rather have lots of junk photos in your mobile phone?
=========================================
My theory of scarcity states that:
“When things:
↓ in number / volumne ↔ ↑in value”
This is not a new concept, I just develop its core ideas using my own applications and hence carrying out reflections in life. The problem of scarcity is the fundamental problem in economics, which spawned numerous economic theories. One of them is by Adam Smith – The Invisible Hand (Economics) & The Free Market, which I will not elaborate here.
How many will cherish things (and people) around them when they have abundant access to it, and take them for granted? How many will only start to regret what they have done when they have lost the things and people they have considered precious?
Cherish do not start at the point of losing.
Money, love, kinship, friendship, good health, your working limbs and a sound mind, the fresh air you are breathing, the green grass and forests that recycles air, drinking water from the tap..
I bet a lot of you are taking at least one of these items for granted, and deemed that they will never run dry. But the fact is, if you do not bother to put in efforts in maintaining the above, chances are you will lose them sooner then you thought. The danger pit of abundance that many fell into, is frequently unidentified. Those things often important to people are often neglected, and left to die on their own, if not abused.
If you think you have lots of money and do not need any savings, try getting struck with cancer or kidney failure. If you think that your love ones will love you forever, try not to show any care and concern to them and if they will leave you. If you think friends will always be there for you while you can’t be bothered, they will leave you eventually (as no one really need friends as liabilities). If you think good health is forever and eat all sorts of junk food, you’re going to get it.
Sometimes, it only takes a minute to say “I love you” to your parents or compliment the excellent things your friends did for you. Even a small “thank you” or a smile goes a long way. I only can see people roaring at their parents or friends when they tried to help out, and think that its 应该的, I’m right as I’m the king / queen. To these people, I tell you. YOU’RE GOING TO FUCKING REGRET IT WHEN THEY ARE NOT WITH YOU ANYMORE! GO SWIM IN A POOL OF SHIT & WAKE UP YOUR BLOODY IDEAS!
So what is deemed precious to you? Take a second a day before you sleep to do some self reflection tonight. Stop taking them for granted.
Do not take things and people you cherish for granted. Do something for them today. Now.
